When thyroid gland is overactive and overstimulates the metabolism by producing too much of thyroid hormone, it is known as hyperactive thyroid gland. What is the significance of the thyroid level in human body and what are the hyperactive thyroid symptoms? Read on to know all about hyperactive thyroid disease.
When the thyroid gland is overactive, or when there is too much of thyroid hormone in the body, it is known as hyperthyroidism. The most common reason behind hyperthyroidism is overproduction of thyroid hormone produced by thyroid gland. This condition is also known as Graves disease, when hyperactive thyroid symptoms are noticed and this type of hyperthyroidism tends to run in families, especially in women. The antibodies in the blood stimulate the thyroid to grow and the enlarged thyroid secretes too much of thyroid hormone. The most common cause of hyperactive thyroid symptoms in children is Graves disease. In other type of situation, which is known as toxic nodular or multi-nodular goiter, one or more nodules or lumps in the thyroid gradually grow and their increased activity leads to the increased output of thyroid hormone into the blood. Sometimes, hyperactive thyroid symptoms are noticed temporarily, when there is some kind of viral infection causing the gland to leak more thyroid hormone. This can be due to the disorder in immune system and this situation is known as thyroiditis. Too much of thyroid hormone intake through tablets can cause thyroiditis.

Hyperactive Thyroid Diet
Hyperactive thyroid symptoms are usually noticed in the people belonging to the age group of 20-40. Thyroid is the master gland of metabolism and a hyperactive thyroid gland can have significant impact upon one's health. Some foods like broccoli, kale, spinach, cauliflower, cabbage, mustard, soy, wintergreen, walnuts and turnips inhibit the effect of thyroid hormone on the body. Peaches and pears can suppress the over functioning of thyroid. Consumption of green vegetables, proteins, limited carbohydrates and regular and proper exercises can help reduce the overflow of thyroid in the body. Other foods which can stabilize the hyperactive thyroid gland include herbs like mother wort, turmeric and bugle-weed. A diet high in Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C and calcium is also recommended by some nutritional experts. A diet that is low in carbohydrates, fiber, and iodine can alleviate many of the hyperactive thyroid symptoms. Limiting the consumption of nicotine, alcohol and caffeine (found in tea, coffee, colas and plain chocolate) will reduce the symptoms of overactive thyroid as they can all raise the metabolic rate.
