Addiction - Understanding Your Treatment Options

rehabs will

Until a decision is made to go to rehab (or to find rehab for a family member) few people ever spend much time considering what's out there. This can lead to a very stressful period when you do actually need some help, and compounded with the difficulties inherent in finding affordable and quality care is simply knowing what kind of rehab you need.

Here are some brief explanations of some of the more common residential drug and alcohol treatment programs on offer.

Christian Rehab

A residential program that may follow the 28 day matrix of treatment, or may offer longer term care. Most Christian rehabs will use the Christian 12 steps as a therapeutic framework, and will also combine in bible study, prayer, Christian counseling and other secular rehab therapies.

For Christians, a Christian rehab, and praying to Jesus Christ often makes a lot of sense.

Conventional or secular rehab

The standard drug and alcohol rehab. Most run programs that run from 28 days up to three months in length, the majority are privately run and many run primarily on a 12 steps based model of treatment. Better rehabs will offer comprehensive care, including a medical detox if necessary, and varied therapies that include individual counseling, group therapy, cognitive behavioral therapies, and in some cases, peripheral programs such as yoga, meditation and exercise programs.

These are the most commonly seen rehabs in America today. The prices range considerably, but most are more expensive and the quality also varies greatly.

Detox Clinic

For those people needing only a medically supervised period of detox, or needing to detox prior to entry into a low cost rehab, a few days in a detox clinic can start you on your journey to health. Medically supervised detox is both more comfortable and safer than trying it one your own, and for some drugs, detoxing without medical supervision can be dangerous.

Many detox clinics are state funded, and may provide low cost detox to those in need.

Executive Rehab

Like conventional rehab but offering greater luxury, privacy and confidentiality and offering the ability to continue to work during the healing process.

Holistic Rehab

Generally not religious in nature, but offering therapies that aim to treat the mind, body and soul as a coherent whole. Holistic rehabs will use alternative and peripheral therapies in addition to conventional therapies of recovery.

Long Term Rehab

Many rehabs, particularly low cost religious based rehabs, may offer care that runs from 6 months to 2 years or longer in length. Some prominent examples of such are the Salvation Army Rehabs and those as run by the Union or Baptists Missions.

Most of these programs will offer the same types of therapies as a conventional rehab, although with less intensity, and most will require that you gain employment throughout the period, or work within the organization as a means of self financing your stay.

Sober Living Housing

Not exactly rehab, but a very good low cost option for those people that just need a little sober support to keep from relapse. Resident will live together affordably in a residence that combines some strict guidelines of behaviors with a zero tolerance policy for alcohol or drugs. Most residents will stay about 1 year in a sober living house.

Therapeutic community (TC)

A long term model of re socialization; in a TC, residents do get some leader driven therapies, but most of the healing actually comes from the community of addicts in recovery. Residents to relearn how to live health and happy lives without the use of alcohol or drugs and TC programs generally run from 1-2 years in duration.

Learn your option, and make a choice that's going to work for you, and is going to get you sober.
